Newest Literacy Stations

Because of our four-day Easter weekend, we got off the schedule of starting new Literacy Stations on Mondays.  Last week it did seem strange to begin a new set of activities on Wednesday, but I think I like this new schedule:  No more staying late on Fridays to get everything set up!  I already stay until about 4:00 - 4:30 on Tuesday, so it shouldn't be a big deal.  And, I will hopefully get out the door a little earlier on Fridays!

Math Literacy.  One of my partners came up with this nifty Math activity.  It is a super cute tulip perfect for making number bonds with sums of ten.  The white discs are some byproduct of ?? that were donated.  The red discs on the leaves are two sided counters.  These are new, but I am thinking about getting out some of my old counters and drawing ladybug spots onto them.

Students will complete this record sheet as they make their number bonds.

Writing Station.  We have been working hard on writing sentences - complete with proper ending punctuation.  Students will work together to read each sentence and place the proper punctuation card at the end of each. 

Once they are finished working with the sentence cards, the kids will fill out this record sheet.  It has four of the same sentences that were on the cards, so hopefully they will be able to write the correct punctuation on the lines!  See bottom of this post for a link for a freebie of this activity.

Literacy Station.  The Kinders will use a Reading Robot to find the Sight Words hidden in this puzzle.  To make the robot, I cut out a small rectangle from a robot shaped note pad and laminated the pages, leaving the laminating film in the hole to make a window.  Yesterday I posted the link to a freebie of this activity.  In it I included a robot that you can use if you can't find these note pads.

 Reading Station.  The  mClass window has opened and our Kindergarten teaching assistant will be testing, so we wanted a pretty simple activity for this station (she usually runs this one).  Using a page found in the book below, students will color, cut out, and reassemble these month puzzles.  They will glue them onto construction paper in order.  Not shown are "cheat sheets" of the months in order and an early finishers page titled "My Birthday Month" where students can write the name of their birthday month and draw a picture of a birthday scene.

This is a really good resource for quick Literacy Centers.

Literacy Stations for the week of 3/12/12

Here's what we will be working on this week:

Listening Station.  Sure, it's a Thanksgiving book... but the kids love it!  (Who said you can't read books out of season anyway?)

Writing Station.  This week our Kinders will be will be working on words to use in their writing.  The main activity is this cute clothesline.  (This is from the book two pictures down.)  After assembling their clotheslines, they will write a sentence telling what day of the week it is.  At the end of the week we will have enough days of the week clotheslines to include in our calendar work!

Writing Station early finishers activity.  One of my partners had this,

so I'm not sure where it came from.

Reading Station.  This week the kiddos will work on vowel sounds.  We have covered all of the vowel sounds in our Reading series, so they will make this cute truck book from the book below.

Math Literacy Station.  I made these little abacuses to help students to practice skip counting by twos.  They are super easy to make:  String twenty pony beads onto a pipe cleaner, slide the ends into 1/2 cuts on the ends of the cardboard base.  Fold and secure with tape.

I found these plates on clearance at Walmart (50 cents for a package of 4!).  They make great trays to help keep small items corralled.  I have also used paper plates to help students keep their manipulatives in one place while working.

Literacy Station.  Students will work on these Phonemic Awareness file folder activites from Lakeshore, and then do the worksheet pictured below.

Literacy Stations for next week

My teaching partners and I use the term "Stations" for our small group literacy work.  We use the term "Centers" for our Developmental Centers (Dramatic Play, Building, Library/Literacy, Math, Discovery, and Sand Centers).  During our Literacy Stations students work in small groups to practice target skills and are done during our 90 minute Literacy Block.  Developmental Centers are at the end our our day.  We stagger our Stations time within the Literacy Block so that our awesome Kinder Teaching Assistant can run one of the stations. One station is teacher led, and the other three are student/parent volunteer led (I have parent volunteers helping with stations on Wednesday and Thursday).

Here are my stations for next week.

I got this pocket chart in Target's Dollar Spot a few years ago.  I use it to organize my Stations.  Each day the yellow cards move down one pocket, with the bottom moving to the top spot.  (The paper at the bottom explains how to rotate the cards in the event of my absence.)

Reading Station.  Led by our teaching assistant, students will read this week's on level reader.  They will then complete the response sheet by writing words onto the "jewels" in the treasure chest.

Group Listening Station.  After listening to the story students will complete the form below.  The basket holding the forms is another Target dollar find.

Literacy Station.  Students will practice beginning and ending sounds using these activities.  The file folder game is by Carson Dellosa (I think) and the other two are from Mailbox.

After students have completed the above Literacy activities they will complete this page from a Teacher's Helper magazine.

Writing Station.  This week the students will  create sight word spelling cards.  Using multiple  colored pencils, they will write and trace the words on index cards.  These will be strung on yarn and used as a reference tool when writing.

Math Literacy Station. We sneak a little math into our literacy block.  Students will examine, compare, and sort shapes.

 Once students have had an opportunity to interact with the shapes, they will complete this page (from a 2009 Mailbox).  In addition to working with shapes, students will practice writing numerals & shape words, and work on following written directions. (This is the station I usually lead.)
